One of the most sinister and evil dystopias ever portrayed was the Village in the 1967 TV series "The Prisoner. It is always shown as bright and friendly and welcoming. Brass bands play while people stroll with colorful parasols. Signs say "walk on the grass" and so forth. Of course there is also torture, assassination, brutal repression, and mind control, but that part was tucked away where the residents could ignore it. Till it came for them. Another great example of such an evil, but bright, place is the portrayal of the planet Camazotz in The Wrinkle in Time. A nice suburban neighborhood with neat mowed lawns and little white houses and kids bouncing a ball in the driveway. Yet a third is in the TV series Channel Zero - the second season No End House has such a place. Anyway, the happy good-looking dystopias are the hardest to pull off as a horror enthusiast, but I guess that's what makes them worth while!

@SandyofCthulhu Always a Cthulhu fan, but also of BRP in General. One of my group’s favorite games was ‘Ringworld’. Keep thinking about starting up another game sometime.

BRP is a system that can be used for a lot of different types of games. Chaosium used it or a variation thereof for RuneQuest, ElfQuest, Superworld, Magic World, and so forth. What sets Call of Cthulhu apart from other TRPGs isn't the system. It's the whole thrust of the game. Most roleplaying games follow this cycle: Take on the challenge. Gain rewards & XP and improve your character. Go after a bigger challenge. More rewards & XP. Rinse and repeat. Almost always the challenge involves combat along the way. It's a compelling cycle, which is why it's so popular. I like it too, which is why even I don't "only" play Call of Cthulhu. Sometimes I want the shot-in-the-arm that other TRPGs provide. But Call of Cthulhu completely subverts the cycle. Your character doesn't get (much) better over time. In many ways, he gets worse. He doesn't get rewards - or if he does it's a moldy old book that sends him to the madhouse by looking at the pictures. The big confrontation at the end of the adventure isn't a boss battle - it's likelier to be something like dynamiting the old mineshaft entrance, or driving away at high speed while Something Horrible flies after you, or frantically performing a ritual while oozing monsters try to interrupt you. Call of Cthulhu is pretty contrarian for a roleplaying game. I specifically realized that combat couldn't be the tentpole of the game, because even the weakest monster (a cultist) is by definition just as tough as an investigator, and probably more ruthless and better-organized. So I had to replace combat with something, and I chose investigation. Peeling back the layers of mystery. Yes there's still combat in Call of Cthulhu, but it's more what happens when you're surprised or failed at something, and it's played like a horror movie, not an action movie. But that's what gave Call of Cthulhu its great success worldwide - you see, if you want the "challenge/XP/challenge" cycle, then you can literally play ANY other game - Traveller, D&D, Corpse Kings. They all have the cycle, done in better or worse versions. But Call of Cthulhu is exceedingly different. It's the "other choice". I know there are a few other TRPGs now which also attempt to offer that choice and I applaud them, but Call of Cthulhu was the first and a lot of people have told me it's the best.

CoC自体がかなりプレーンなBRP寄りなので、ルールメカニズム的には、SAN値以外は同じジャンルのTRPGと言ってよいのでは? もちろん、原作リスペクト、神話的生物の要素が必須とあらば、話は別ですが

One thing that's completely lost on younger generations is the cover art that made the 80s and 90s so special. Granted, not all of it was great, but anyone who can look at the cover of Wasteland (1988) without feeling even a little nostalgic clearly never experienced it back in the day. Before you even played the game for the first time, you could get lost in the art, read the manual, and the story. You could picture the world in your head. And yes, the game never looked like the cover art - but our imagination filled in the blanks.

I missed this game so damn much. Finally got it running again, just so much nostalgia, especially with the cold spring we've been having. Mechwarrior 2 Mercenaries is my all time favorite MW game.

For a game made in 2018 by a relatively small team in Unity, Battletech by Harebrained Schemes looks like concept art at times. Really strong art direction and technical execution

Choplifter (1982) was created by Dan Gorlin and published by Broderbund originally for the Apple II. One of the first computer games ported to arcade (by Sega in 1985) rather than the reverse. Goal is to rescue people behind enemy lines. A hit and available in nearly every system back then.

@GravySauceCream Summer vacations to Vicksburg, Missippi in July. Hot and humid as the devils crotch. We’d get to the Holiday Inn and dad would crank that think up and by the time we got back from lunch the condensation on the windows was an inch deep. 👍

"What a shame to scrap the ship, should have been saved." We hear that comment quite a lot. Now there is an opportunity to act. The caretakers that have helped preserve USS Aries, the sole remaining example of the Pegasus class hydrofoils, are seeking a home for the ship. She currently resides in Missouri, but is in need of a new home, one that is more accessible. I would like to ask our followers to share her story, get the word out, and help find Aries a new home. If you have contacts with museums or preservation groups, please pass the word on. In addition, please follow the USS Aries website (though the Social Media pages seem to be updated more regularly) to stay up to date with the latest information and to follow her journey.

The Space Shuttle Challenger gave us all PTSD. We watched it blow up during class and then went on with our day, no counseling, no trauma response. We were expected to carry on so we did. No wonder we're tough and DGAF.
