⭐️ Lesson learned during Thanksgiving Day🙏 This will be a long thread. Brace yourself! 🧵 🤔Which is more important: quality or quantity? - Recently, an ARR reviewer criticized our paper for including only three languages, despite each dataset costing us over $100 due to thorough quality control and human annotations, resulting in a low score of 1. - On the other hand, I encountered a new VL dataset paper that included hundreds of languages, but the quality was lacking, with examples in the main paper being notably inaccurate. These datasets were entirely AI-generated. I hope they address and correct the figures since I have high expectations. I believe researchers should prioritize quality over quantity, as creating a high-quality dataset is not cheap. While AI-generated data can be valuable, it should be complemented by rigorous human annotations. It is unfair to assess the quality of a paper solely based on the number of languages it includes while overlooking the importance of data quality. I hope @ReviewAcl can highlight this point in the reviewing guidelines. #NLProc @aclmeeting #LLM #data

Tomorrow morning at #EMNLP2024 (the morning after the social) I'll be presenting a poster about our recent work on Atomic Inference. Super excited to share the work with you! It will be at 10:30 in the poster room downstairs (Jasmine). x.com/_joestacey_/st…

Here is a little 🧵 about our new #EMNLP2024 paper! arxiv.org/pdf/2305.13214 In this paper we use LLM-generated facts as atoms in atomic inference systems (for NLI). So first of all, what is atomic inference, and why should you care about it?

What is the story behind the ACL Anthology? How did NLP escape issues around closed access, high publication costs, and governance by external societies/publishers? I guess there must be some interesting history and heroes to thank for this situation!

On one end of the line: ELIZA, the psychotherapist from the 60s. First chatbot to make people believe it was human. Rulebound, scripted, deterministic. Still around on the web. On the other end of the line: yr favorite LLM. How will they react? Will they know?

#OTD in 1996, Carl Sagan died: 27 years without Carl «When my husband died, because he was so famous and known for not being a believer, many people would come up to me ― it still sometimes happens ― and ask me if Carl changed at the end and converted to a belief in an afterlife. They also frequently ask me if I think I will see him again. Carl faced his death with unflagging courage and never sought refuge in illusions. The tragedy was that we knew we would never see each other again. I don't ever expect to be reunited with Carl. But, the great thing is that when we were together, for nearly twenty years, we lived with a vivid appreciation of how brief and precious life is. We never trivialized the meaning of death by pretending it was anything other than a final parting. Every single moment that we were alive and we were together was miraculous-not miraculous in the sense of inexplicable or supernatural. We knew we were beneficiaries of chance. That pure chance could be so generous and so kind. That we could find each other, as Carl wrote so beautifully in Cosmos, you know, in the vastness of space and the immensity of time. That we could be together for twenty years. That is something which sustains me and it’s much more meaningful. The way he treated me and the way I treated him, the way we took care of each other and our family, while he lived. That is so much more important than the idea I will see him someday. I don't think I'll ever see Carl again. But I saw him. We saw each other. We found each other in the cosmos, and that was wonderful». ― Ann Druyan
