I’m not saying this to push a pick for ROTY, but I have covered every game Cooper Flagg has played. I don’t have a vote, though, so it doesn’t matter. However, the perception for awards is always entertaining to discuss, though. This is the same argument I remember seeing against Paige Bueckers for Rookie of the Year season with the Dallas Wings and I don’t agree with it.
Some rookies join teams in different phases that already did their losing in previous seasons and have building blocks in place like the Charlotte Hornets do with LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller, among others. They don’t need to keep losing. They’re ready to go for it now. Cooper Flagg’s team has to lose this season to add a piece that the Hornets already added previously.
If you switch Flagg and Knueppel, the Dallas Mavericks would still be losing a lot and the Hornets would still be winning. In my opinion, Charlotte would likely be even more successful with Flagg, though.
