@realLatifLove Hornets currently have the best turnaround in two seasons on +/- in history. That can't be completely ignored. Culture changing impact. Kon is leading the team at a 8.1 Win Share and his WS/48 would land him just above Tatum, in the top 100 All Time. x.com/Wolfblocker/st…

@HornetsReddit Charlotte Hornets currently have the largest increase in history for +/- over two seasons. This season they are at +411 this season, giving them a total of +1158. Kon is leading the team at a 8.1 Win Share and his WS/48 would land him just above Tatum, in the top 100 All Time.

It’s been entertaining discussing the rookie of the year debate with Maverick fans the last few days — even if they think I’m an analytics nerd who doesn’t know what I’m talking about. I don't take anything to heart on Twitter. Can’t remember the last time a ROY debate has been this close or spirited. It’s apparent the Hornets need more fans, they stand no chance against #Mffl  on this app 😂. I want to ask the Mavericks fans who see this as a serious question. If Flagg led Kon in every single advanced metric, would you say they shouldn’t be used in debates?

@ryantristanb @KalshiHoops What is rather impressive is that only two players have done this in the last 33 years. Have to go back to the Grandmama days when Charlotte also did it in 1992.

@ryantristanb @KalshiHoops Sort of, still ONLY ten rookies have done that before the 40% 3PT% filter added. Notable near-misses due to FG%: Larry Bird (47.4%), Grant Hill (47.7%), Cooper Flagg (47.3%), Luka Dončić (42.7%), LeBron James (41.7%)

I’m not saying this to push a pick for ROTY, but I have covered every game Cooper Flagg has played. I don’t have a vote, though, so it doesn’t matter. However, the perception for awards is always entertaining to discuss, though. This is the same argument I remember seeing against Paige Bueckers for Rookie of the Year season with the Dallas Wings and I don’t agree with it. Some rookies join teams in different phases that already did their losing in previous seasons and have building blocks in place like the Charlotte Hornets do with LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller, among others. They don’t need to keep losing. They’re ready to go for it now. Cooper Flagg’s team has to lose this season to add a piece that the Hornets already added previously. If you switch Flagg and Knueppel, the Dallas Mavericks would still be losing a lot and the Hornets would still be winning. In my opinion, Charlotte would likely be even more successful with Flagg, though.
Ryan Wolstat@WolstatSun

I still think overall, Knueppel has had the way better season. Flagg will likely be a better player long-term, but I’d have a hard time voting him for ROY over Knueppel’s historic year which includes reviving the hapless Hornets.

I just foresaw a horrible future. What if we fall to the nine seed and end up losing to the ten seed in the play-in at home.

@ChasePletcher4 Hornets have 4 guys averaging 17.4+ PPG, all in the top 44 overall for PPG. Coby will fall 7 games short of qualifying to make it 5 guys over 17.4. (17.5 PPG on 47 GP)

The hornets basically have 5 guys who can pretty much average close to 20. And if just 2 maybe 3 of them can have a “good game” they’re so hard to beat because the rest of the roster are guys who are so good as niche role players (Moussa, Grant, Sion, etc)

annnnnd we’re now looking a *strength of opponent adjusted statistics* in a ROTY debate bc analysts must continue to add to Kon column to justify keeping vote the same instead of just voting what’s clear as day & what history will ultimately dictate: Flagg is the rightful ROTY
Latif Love@realLatifLove

To build on Dean’s point about Flagg and Kon’s performance against variance teams and defenses, I created a chart using data from @PivotFade that shows how their efficiency responds to stronger or weaker competition. Though they have different roles and play in different contexts, a near-9 % true shooting difference isn't something to look past.

EPM is an advanced metric that tries to measure a singular player's total impact on their team's points per 100 possessions. Here are the top ten rookie seasons (amongst players to finish top 3 in ROTY) since the stat began to be tracked. Of the 75 players that qualify, Kon Knueppel ranks 4th. The average EPM amongst qualified players is 0.09. In the last 23 seasons, the rookie who led the contenders has won 10 times.

@richierandall The Defense has to respect all 4. Overall Hornets record in period: 31-14 since 1/1/2026: When Miles Bridges makes at least one 3-pointer in the first 6 minutes of the game: Hornets record 12-3 When Miles does not make a 3-pointer in the first 6 minutes: Hornets record 19-11

Miles Bridges is at his best when he’s playing within the flow of the offense. At points, he’s really excelled as that 4th option. However, when he over-dribbles, it rarely results in something positive. 🥶 Of 70 players who have 70+ pull-up 3PFG, he ranks last in efficiency.

@KalshiHoops They have to dig so deep for stats it's funny, Kon isn't even in the same room as Cooper in a redraft even the GM of Charlotte takes Cooper still. Kon is great but shouldn't be in any ROTY convo period.

@77PercNowitzt41 @KalshiHoops The 40%+ at 3pt% was not copied over. Cooper: needs 15 shots in a row to be at 48% FG% needs 40 shots in a row at 3s to be at 40% 3PT%

@OG_BENJAYLATREZ Somehow, Tatum is only averaging 4 PPG more over the last 4 games than Miles and only a +6 higher +/- than Miles. Jayson has 0 OREB during that stretch but a Moose-ton DREB.
