To all those saying there was room in front of the car has not dealt with a high powered water system. Bending a fire hose at a hydrant creates a kink that severely restricts or stops water flow, reducing pressure critical for firefighting. Because pressurized large-diameter supply hoses are extremely heavy, rigid, and hard to bend, firefighters often take a straight, direct path to avoid this kink, which is why they may break car windows to pass a hose through.
