"Existing carbon budgets may overstate the magnitude of the coastal carbon sink" because eroding carbon stocks along the VA Atlantic coast are dominated by deep, UNvegetated sediments (nope, not marsh, not seagrass). New paper by @MaryBryanBarks1

Detailed estimates of coastal forest retreat in the mid-Atlantic. More than 55,000 acres of forest converted to marsh since 1984, mostly controlled by sea level rise and topography, but less rapid than you would predict.

Very excited to share with you our latest work published today! The study suggests that although coastal forests retreated upslope, the rate of forest retreat is half of sea-level rise rate, pointing to a pronounced lag in upland conversion by ~50 years. doi.org/10.1111/gcb.17…

The study also shows that lateral forest retreat was strongly mediated by topography and salinity, but not directly explained by RSLRR, climate, or disturbance. Together, these findings suggest a multi-decadal lag between RSLRR and land conversion that implies coastal resistance.

Looking for a postdoc to join our group at VIMS! Postdoc will use remote sensing, alongside ecological and geomorphological monitoring data, to quantify landscape evolution in the mid-Atlantic sea-level rise hotspot. Details + application here: jobs.wm.edu/postings/56899

Our recent analysis of land cover change revealed that nearly 200 Gg of carbon were lost from a portion of the coast in ~40 years BUT compensatory mechanisms in the coastal landscape replaced this loss in <7 years! link.springer.com/article/10.100…
