the point is they enact a bunch of employment laws that are really expensive not to follow, and then they don’t follow them themselves because they don’t care about the cost. The people paying for their mistakes are the ones following the rules they made.

£250k for Chris Wormald to leave is unsurprising, this is the approx cost to replace an underperforming C level exec in the private sector. Prime Minister / Public sector can ignore the rules, fire at will and eat the cost because it’s not their money.

@LaurenMaeve The City Bridge Foundation runs a surplus because it’s been compounding the investment of tolls and bequests tax free for nearly 1000 years. It could, if it wanted, take on more bridges (and did so with the millennium bridge). Doesn’t mean it should though I agree.

City of London corporation is the sole trustee, and it runs at a surplus which is why they give to charity. Maybe if the corporation ran the whole of London we’d also run at a surplus, but there’s no reason to bring a well run org under the failing Mayor at city hall

One of London’s bridges has been closed to traffic for 7 years due to structural faults, and a public body responsible for maintaining bridges has donated nearly a billion over 30 years to charities tackling “inequality and injustice”.

@lfg_uk @saragezdari @CityBridgeFndn they are an ancient institution and have more than £1.5bn under management. Far more than they need to upkeep the five bridges they have. Since the 90s they’ve been giving the excess to City charities, but this feels like it could be a good use.
