These images were generated back in 2022 when I started inbreeding my machine learning models and reprocessing their outputs into gen AI tools back and forth. The journey of being hit with a feeling screaming "There is something here!" from the day they were made until this past week, when I finally had enough distance to look at them more critically hit me like a brick of insight: just how strongly they illustrate everything I care about in my practice.
In a world that requires so much definition of self, genre, gender, branding and so on, the characters in these images exist never quite a plate, nor a jug, nor a vase, always liminal and subject to who tries to define them.
The 60 images collection is partitioned into 6 categories:
The Capatiousness, The Intricacies, The Nor Neither, The Plattery, The Receptive Depth and The Relief.
There are 20 attributes each with variations between 2 and 10 depending on the specific attribute. Many attributes are arbitrary to my own perception, especially when determining is something belongs on a wall or on a table; this includes a "maybe".
This concoction of categorisation, numbers within and without pushes the rarity percentages into a curious math that points to individual subjectivity. As people, we are as common as we are rare, as simple as we are complex, and ultimately we are more than appearances and the functions some attempt to assign us, and amidst navigating the joy and the struggle of just being, here comes the emo pottery.
