my pet dog, ginger, passed away today. he was 12, and i still remember the day i got him home, 300kms on my lap all the way from my nani’s house. i fought and cried and begged my parents, claiming that i can take care of him myself, at the big bold age of 12. and i did, for the most part. i can’t say gingu was the most loving dog. quite frankly, he hated almost everyone. he barked and growled at every person who came near him. but he loved me. god forbid someone yelled at me, you could bet that he’d bite. he listened to nobody but me. even when i left home for college, ginger’s vet visits were reserved especially for when i was visiting. i was probably the only kid at the vet’s, with my little aggressive dog. my favourite trick for the longest time was to sit with ginger so nobody would bother me. ginger was possibly my first exposure to responsibility. i’ve fed him, bathed him, groomed him, walked him, nursed him, all of it when he refused to let anyone else near him. x-rays, surgeries, infections, medications, we’ve been through all of it. hell, i’ve been bitten more times than i can count. got my first rabies vaccine when i was 13, and till date, i’m regularly vaccinated for rabies. i’ve loved multiple animals throughout my life, but ginger taught me what it really meant to love you need to have had a pet to realize how much it means when an animal chooses you. when you come home, and you’re the first person they run to. when they’re in pain, and you’re the only person they come to. when they will only eat if you feed them. when no matter how much you say no, they will cover you in saliva and fur until you’ve pet them. ginger, i hope you’re okay now buddy :’) i know you didn’t have it easy, but i’m so proud of you for fighting. for sharing your quota of affection with 3 new siblings. for guarding all of us day and night. for loving me unconditionally. i know you waited for me to show up, and i’m so sorry i couldn’t be there with you. i hope you didn’t feel too much pain. i hope you remembered all of the good times we had. i hope you barked at everyone one last time. i wish i could see you one last time. i hear you gave everyone a tough time, i always knew you wouldn't go down easy :’) in a world full of humans, i’m so honoured that you chose me to be yours <3
