We are sad to report that Mary Rand, one of Great Britain's greatest athletes, has sadly passed away at the age of 86. With long jump gold at the 1964 Olympics, Rand became the first British woman to top the podium in track and field at the Games. She held the long jump world record of 6.76m – set at the Olympics – for four years (between 1964 and 1968). Rand also claimed three medals (4x100m & pentathlon being the others) at Tokyo 1964.

After today's excellent decision by the IOC.,if the Rio 2016 women's 800m. was held today, the 3 medallists in my photo. Wambui, Niyonsaba & Semenya would be barred and the medals would go to Canada's Melissa Bishop, Poland's Joanna Jozwik & GB's Lynsey Sharp @AthleticsWeekly

That's six (!) British women sub-8:50 so far this year; Hannah Nuttall, Elise Thorner, Katie Snowden, Eloise Walker, Alex Millard & Innes FItzGerald (mixed gender race). Plus India Weir 8:51 tonight in Boston.

@BrianHaining @ian_hodge8 Quite simply put they were super hero’s. To make top 24 in the world is the toughest challenge in British Athletics and cannot be compared to other events as they don’t even come close. There are just too many variables faced by the Decathlete that cannot be covered in a post.

@aathorner @ian_hodge8 Alan, I'm not doubting the difficulty of the event at all. I'm just hoping a Brit is able to compete at a World level as the likes of Macey and Thompson did in the past and as we do in several other events

3 random facts as we approach Tokyo: 1) Dina has already raced 31 times in the World outdoors! 2) it's now 16 yrs since we've selected a guy for the Javelin. 3) Tokyo is the first time since 1983 that the three 100m & 200m selections are the same (it was the Men that year).

@BrianHaining @ian_hodge8 The decathlon is the hardest event in the world of sport - physically, technically and mentally. It’s not even debatable. Ask any athlete who attempts what it takes to get to the start line in world class shape and you might have the answer to that question.
