Venetians seemed almost prescient in their ability to create an architectural base and form that was so sound, so impervious to Time. Their technical understanding of the long term process rivaled that of present day specialists… It seems like these MAJOR techniques were simply assumed to work, basing the whole of the city’s future stability on it. And yet, it would take hundreds of years to fully understand the long term effects of these underlying mechanics. Hammering 10,000,000 26ft logs into the wet clay earth, knowing they would petrify, creating a stronger than concrete foundation? And knowing a specific type of stone would outlast the abrasive salt sea, for thousands of years?
