She got fired for feeding hungry kids. Debbie Solsman spent 14 years as a beloved lunch lady at Denver Place Elementary School in Wilmington, Ohio. Every single day, she watched kids walk out of the lunch line holding nothing but a plain cheese sandwich simply because they had no money in their account. The other children in the cafeteria knew exactly why those kids got the cheese sandwich, and so did Debbie. She refused to let that slide. When students couldn't afford to pay for their food, she covered the cost out of her own pocket right then and there, or wrote IOUs, put them in the cash register, and paid them off with her next paycheck. She would sometimes buy hungry students an extra slice of pizza, asking them what they had for supper the night before. Sometimes they told her nothing. Solsman heard stories of food insecurity constantly. Children who already received a free lunch would come back saying they were still hungry, and she learned they hadn't even had supper the night before. Then the school found out. The official reason for her firing was "failure to account for food sales at her cashier job in the cafeteria and providing food without payment to her grandchildren." Solsman said the turn of events had been "really hard" and she "felt like termination was a harsh punishment." Despite her firing, Solsman said she would do the same thing again if a student told her they were hungry. The attention drawn to her story led to two job offers at other schools.
