Friends, allow me to share a some exciting news! I have accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Eastern University in PA. My appointment is in the philosophy department with a partial load in the Templeton Honors College. >>

This semester I get to design and teach a class called Philosophy and Literature and I CANNOT WAIT.

New faculty orientation reading. I love it here.

So it begins!

Over the last two weeks I have said many sad goodbyes in both South Bend, IN and Hamilton, ON and am really looking forward to some very happy hellos in Philadelphia.

@freganmitts I read Crossroads and thought his characters were a good illustration of layers of self deception and that it throws an interesting wrench in Anscombes moral philosophy.

Another literature question for you all: should I read Franzen? Would I enjoy Franzen? For some reason he hasn’t passed the vibe check for me but I also think my vibes here might be baseless.

Dear Friends: After 15 years in Europe it is time to return home. I have taken a position at St Mary's Seminary & University (1791), in Baltimore. The first year I will be an Associate Prof and the next made Full Prof. Thank you @StPatsMaynooth for everything, it was a grace!

@freganmitts I think there are several “ways in.” That is definitely a good one. But if I don’t have enough time to do that, the short cut is to start by explaining what ethics means to Kant and Hegel as background figures and the problem Abraham poses to them.

@amber_bowen Interesting! Can you explain why you start there? It just seems so crucial to me to have established the aesthetic and ethical categories, among other things, before taking this on.

Gotta say this every year or so. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES start Kierkegaard with Fear and Trembling. Impossible to understand without having read other stuff of his.

At the age of 42, I’ve finally developed a helpful rubric for what I say yes to and what I say no to.

Someone needs to make a heart wringing movie that foregrounds Edith Stein’s relationship with Husserl over the years.

Having lived in Minnesota and Canada, I am rather familiar with “false springs.” But Indiana is the weirdest of them all. One hour it is sunny and mild, the next there is a blizzard. Then more sun, and then another blizzard.
