🚨 Just hours after the world cautiously welcomed news of a US-Israeli ceasefire with #Iran, in #Lebanon the nightmare for civilians has become more terrifying. Today has been the deadliest day since the latest round of fighting began on 2 March with an intense barrage of air strikes carried out across south Lebanon, the Beqaa valley and in crowded civilian areas in central #Beirut – many without warning. Hospitals have put out calls for blood donations, overwhelmed by the number of injured arriving. We reiterate the urgent need #Israel to uphold its obligations under international humanitarian law and ensure civilians are protected. Despite few amendments to the previous drafts, any death sentences imposed under this law would constitute a violation of the right to life and, when imposed against Palestinians from the OPT, may also amount to war crimes. The international community must exert maximum pressure on the Israeli authorities to immediately repeal this law, fully abolish the death penalty, and dismantle all laws and practices that contribute to the system of apartheid against Palestinians.

On the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, let's remember: Everyone must be treated with dignity and respect–irrespective of their caste or race.

Names like Ajit Dhakal Mijar, Angira Pasi, Nawaraj BK, Rinku Kumari Sada, and Inisha BK remind us how deeply entrenched caste-based discrimination is in our society.

Caste-based discrimination in Nepal continues to deny #Dalits equality, justice, and safety. From restricted access to education and livelihoods to tragic cases of rape and murder, systemic bias affects lives in every way.

Afghanistan: At a time when the human rights situation in Afghanistan continues to deteriorate, the extension of UNAMA’s mandate (@UNAMAnews) for only three months - at the request of the US - is deeply concerning. A one-year renewal would have provided the stability and predictability needed for the mission to focus on implementing its mandate, particularly its work on human rights monitoring and reporting, as well as its Women, Peace and Security components. Short-term renewals also risk reopening negotiations on the mandate itself, diverting attention from implementation and potentially weakening sustained international scrutiny of the actions of the Taliban de facto authorities. Any review of UNAMA’s mandate should be transparent and conducted in meaningful consultation with Afghans, particularly women, civil society, and minority communities.
