How Perpetual Elections Produce a Soft State The conflict between a perpetual election cycle and forward-looking national governance lies at the heart of what ails India’s democracy. India’s energy and economic crisis began in March in the wake of Trump’s war on Iran, yet Modi’s appeal for austerity came only yesterday — immediately after the conclusion of high-stakes state elections. The government knew the “house was on fire” in March, but waited until the ballots had been counted before reaching for the fire extinguisher, knowing full well that the “extinguisher” — price hikes and austerity — would sting the very people who had just voted. This political make-believe came at a steep cost: India bled foreign-exchange reserves while Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) lost nearly ₹30,000 crore per month. Modi’s austerity appeal now appears to be a “soft launch” for a series of unpopular but likely unavoidable measures, including fuel price hikes, higher import duties on luxury goods and gold, and potentially even Covid-style restrictions on mobility and consumption. Modi has also appealed to farmers to halve their use of heavily subsidized fertilizers. While reducing fertilizer use could ease pressure on a fiscally strained budget, it also risks lowering crop yields, potentially fuelling food inflation later this year. More fundamentally, the election-first mindset of India’s political class has created a system in which difficult but necessary decisions are routinely treated as electorally toxic. Perennial elections not only hinder India’s economic progress and compromise national security, but also reinforce the characteristics of a soft state.

Modi’s scheduled UAE stopover on Friday, just days after an Iranian strike on the Fujairah Petroleum Industries Zone (FOIZ), signals India’s readiness to safeguard its energy interests and the 3.5 million-strong Indian diaspora in the UAE, even as they find themselves on the front lines of a Middle Eastern conflict. Modi has transformed the UAE-India relationship into a close strategic and economic partnership, with the two countries increasingly moving toward security cooperation. Meanwhile, Fujairah — the UAE’s only multipurpose port on the Gulf of Oman, located outside the volatile Strait of Hormuz — has emerged as India’s “safety valve” for oil and gas imports. The stopover underscores India’s determination to secure more resilient energy supply chains less dependent on transit through the Strait of Hormuz.

3 months into the Iran-US war and PM Modi is still clueless about ensuring India’s energy security. It is shameless, reckless and downright immoral that the PM is pushing the common citizen into inconvenience, instead of building contingencies to ensure our economy is unaffected by this global crisis. When elections and petty politics are the sole priority of the PM, the end result is an impending economic catastrophe. The PM and his government must make all necessary arrangements to ensure we have ample fuel reserves and no citizen faces any hardship as a result of their lack of planning.
