After completing his term, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, the 9th President of Somalia and a man with broad popularity across the country, quietly moved into a rented house in the capital. What followed was something rarely seen in modern politics. Somalis, both at home and across the diaspora, launched a grassroots fundraising campaign titled “Thank You, Mr. President.” Over the course of several days, 300,000 US dollars were raised. People contributed voluntarily, not out of obligation, but out of genuine appreciation for his integrity, with the aim of building him a home as a lasting gesture of gratitude. Construction of the house began in July 2023 in the Ceel Jaalle area of Marka city, Lower Shabelle region. The project has now been completed, and the home was officially inaugurated on February 6 by local residents on behalf of all the citizens, inside Somalia and across the diaspora, who took part in the campaign. During President Farmaajo’s term, his administration was marked by: ▪️For the first time in decades, a noticeable reduction in corruption ▪️Rebuilding the Somali National Army ▪️Developing a plan to end the presence of African peacekeeping forces ▪️Ending the presence of the European naval force, EU Naval Force Operation Atalanta, which had been operating in Somali waters since 2008 under the pretext of combating piracy ▪️Restoring Somali control over its airspace and transferring management from Kenya to Mogadishu ▪️Advancing the long standing efforts to lift the arms embargo and secure debt relief ▪️Most notably, expelling the UAE and dismantling forces affiliated with it inside Somalia This chapter remains, for many Somalis, a rare example of leadership remembered for integrity rather than personal gain.
