@economeager @stuartbuck1 For sure there’s a lot of garbage science, and my field (public health) is a leading culprit. And I’m not hopeful that it’s a problem that realistically can be solved. Too many powerful institutions are too heavily invested in the status quo.

@bartbing71 @stuartbuck1 tbh i dont know that we actually need more science. we need better science. a lot of what we get now is garbage, that seems like the first order problem.

Much criticism of NIH for not funding Kariko. What's a policy remedy? One wild idea: create a new institute at NIH called the National Institute of Orphan Ideas. You can apply for funding only if other institutes said that your idea will never work or is too high-risk.

@stuartbuck1 @economeager But didn’t that ramping up contribute to more science getting done, even if it didn’t less, or even increased, competition?

@bartbing71 @economeager Yes and no . . . the "NIH doubling" some 20 years ago is generally thought to have been perverse in its effects, because universities and medical centers just ramped up their hiring and buildings to a point where competition was worse than ever when funding leveled off.

@stuartbuck1 @economeager Also it would hurt if Congress would increase NIH’s budget to they they could fund more projects more generously. As I understand it, though, Congress actually just cut NIH’s budget. Sigh.

@stuartbuck1 @economeager It would probably need its own study section. Study sections play a huge role in determining what gets funded and what doesn’t, and it’s often there rather than at the institutes that a proposal gets dinged as not feasible or too high-risk.
