@denujak @AikawaElena It is definitely possible, as there have been a few large scale studies that have already taken this approach, measuring either S100A8/9 or S100A9 in human serum samples. The heterodimer has been implicated in autoimmune thyroid disorders and arthritis, just to name a few.

@denujak @AikawaElena Taken together, these results suggested that the homodimer (S100A9) has a greater binding affinity and a more significant role in the RAGE pathway than the heterodimer (S100A8/9), which was also supported by previous literature, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pbio.1000097.

@denujak @AikawaElena Additionally, there were limited osteogenic effects, as only Runx2 was increased at the mRNA level and no other osteogenic markers showed significant effects (Supplemental Fig. IV).

@denujak @AikawaElena Thank you for the question @denujak, as you bring up an important point. When we explored the possible effects on inflammation and osteogenic activity, we found that treatment with S100A8/9 protein in vitro only increased inflammatory markers (TNFa and IL1-B).
