@BogartsEyeball He may not have explicitly threatened physical annexation using military force, but I don't think it was unreasonable to wonder what would have happened if we didn't buckle under the pressure of tariffs and acquiesce to "51st statehood" (putting aside the legality of it).

@bfour_88 That we were going to invade Canada? No. That’s not really justified. No military action was threatened. It was brought up by weirdos online and the media. To bring it up constantly, like it’s a real thing even now. A bit much. The article I read lead with “invasion”.

@bfour_88 I don’t blame them no. I just got annoyed with everyone from Trump, Carney, the media in both countries, on down to rando online people who seemingly never bothered to research how statehood works. The President isn’t part of the process. That and the damn maps people made.

@BogartsEyeball Yeah, like there's a literal Crown on the Ontario license plate. And too many people are unable to stop for two seconds to think, "huh, I wonder what that's all about." 😄Maybe they don't know the meaning of "ut incepit fidelis sic permanet" but the other signs are too obvious.

@bfour_88 In reply to this about the coinage and license plates It’s a shame. But not shocking. Most Americans have no idea we once were British America. Go to a “No Kings” rally and ask them who our last King was. Most won’t have a clue.

@BogartsEyeball True, but when the commander-in-chief of the most powerful military force in world history talks about using "economic force" to compel statehood and about how the border is "artificial", you can't blame people for getting anxious, at least in the beginning.

@BogartsEyeball Maybe. But Canada is a constitutional monarchy, by law, the constitution, history, etc. That's just a fact, even if too many Canadians are ignorant about it (which is our problem, not his). If it was really meant as a jab/roast then it was rather undeserved.

@BogartsEyeball Problem is that the King wouldn't have been able to make that call without being first advised by the government/PM to do so. Maybe they had some informal off record discussions in private when Trump went to the UK for his State Visit in September but I'm not aware of any.

@bfour_88 Do I think Trump believes he’s so awesome in his own mind he that he alone could convince Canada to apply for statehood? Yes. Do I believe the King could have made a phone call to Trump and stopped it? Yes.

@BogartsEyeball No doubt that he knew that Charles visited, considering that the U.S. Ambassador himself made some choice comments about the visit. But I have no idea what Trump knew or didn't know about Charles' status as King of Canada.

@bfour_88 As much as Trump adores the Royal Family, I’m sure he knew Charles visited. He’s half British after all. In May of 2025, Trump ruled out any invasion and a Canadian paper just brought it up again. Do I think Trump was ever going to? No.

@BogartsEyeball The only equivalent I can think of to "Governor" in Canada is the Governor-General. But clearly that's not what Trump was referring to: "hey, Trudeau, you're now King Charles' vice-regal representative! haha owned" Maybe the headline is a bit sensationalist but Trump asking...

@BogartsEyeball This is the most believable thing ever. There are *Canadians* who will look at our coinage with the monarch's effigy or the $20 bill with the monarch's face on it (or even ON license plates with the little crown in the middle/corner) and will still not put two and two together.
