Now thy self. I didn’t. I wanted to match to Ophthalmology but I have oven mitts for hands. I wanted to do Anesthesia but couldn’t hack the 3am crash case. I matched to FM but didn’t see myself doing it for 40 years. All three times I had the courage to pull the ripcord. As preceptors, we need to teach failure as a success.

Emergency medicine, like any specialty is not for everyone. In my career, I’ve seen a handful of staff who early on in their journey had the insight to change paths. To me, these were brave decisions made by very intelligent people. How do we teach and advise on this insight?
