The story behind AC/DC’s song “Back in Black” is one of the most powerful and emotional in Rock History.
It all began in February 1980, when Bon Scott, the band’s charismatic and wild original lead singer, died at the age of 33 in London from acute alcohol poisoning.
His death left AC/DC devastated, and many thought the band was finished for good. However, brothers Angus and Malcolm Young decided to carry on in honor of their friend and bandmate.
The entire album and especially the title track was conceived as a tribute to Bon. The all-black cover symbolized mourning, but also the strength to come back stronger. They didn’t want something sad or morbid, but rather to celebrate Bon’s life and rock and roll.
A few days after the tragedy, the band held auditions to find a new singer. Among the candidates was Brian Johnson, former lead singer of Geordie, who at the time was nearly broke, working as a car mechanic in England. Brian flew to London, sang a couple of songs with the band, and was chosen almost instantly.
They recorded the album in just a few weeks in the Bahamas with producer Mutt Lange. Brian was asked to write lyrics that weren’t sad, but rather a celebration. Thinking about Bon’s wild life, with his “nine lives” like a cat who abused everything and ran free, the lyrics were born.
The phrase “Back in Black” meant coming back strong, being reborn from the darkness. It wasn’t Brian introducing himself, as many believe, but the band and Bon’s spirit saying, “We’re back, stronger than ever.”
The album Back in Black was released on July 25, 1980, just five months after Bon’s death, and became one of the best-selling albums in history. The song “Back in Black” became an eternal rock anthem, featuring one of the most recognizable riffs in the world. AC/DC turned grief into one of the genre’s greatest triumphs.
As Malcolm Young said, it was about remembering the good times with Bon. His spirit is in every note.

Liverpool’s legendary tradition of applauding opposition goalkeepers is 60 years old and still one of the classiest moments in football.
It began in the mid-1960s when Bill Shankly sent England World Cup hero Gordon Banks out early at Anfield. The Kop rose as one and gave the Leicester keeper a thunderous ovation, a heartfelt mark of respect for goalkeeping excellence that has lived on ever since. In the cauldron of Anfield, the famous stand always pauses to honour quality between the posts, no matter the colours.
A unforgettable recent moment came in (2018) when Iker Casillas received a warm standing ovation from the Kop during Porto’s Champions League visit. The Spanish legend later said:
“I want to thank Liverpool fans for the affection they showed… coming to a stadium like this and being applauded like that is superb.”
Pure class from the Kop. Best fans in the world bar none ❤️
