My family has lived in Tampa since they came over from Cuba in the 1890s. I'm trying not to get emotional thinking about the destruction this storm is likely to bring.

We're in for the literal long haul, because NCDOT now says I-40 is going to be closed for "months" between TN and NC. The typical detour via I-26 was also washed away in Unicoi County, so there's no longer any direct interstate access between our states: wbir.com/article/news/l…

Wondering what you can do to help out the victims of Helene in western NC? NCDOT's Division 1 is collecting donations to send along with crews aiding in recovery efforts. You can drop off your donations at any NCDOT facility in northeastern NC, and we will collect & deliver them.

Crisis Cleanup has issued the phone number available for folks to call for assistance with debris cleanup from Hurricane Helene. Call (844) 965-1386. All services are free, but service is not guaranteed. This hotline will remain open through Friday, October 11, 2024.
