i have concluded that some of this comes down to taste, but a lot of it comes down to people not expecting or wanting to be challenged by music or art. for me, being challenged is one of the great gifts / joys that music can offer.

it’s interesting to see people saying they don’t like arirang after just one listen. which makes me curious—is this normal? personally i need to listen to albums multiple times to absorb them. so many of my fav albums ever didn’t “hit” for me—or at all—on first or second listen.

notice here i did not say “korean roots.” i have a real problem with the complaints that arirang isn’t “korean enough” bc it has “too much english” or not enough korean instrumentation or signifiers or other songwriters. bts doesn’t need to perform koreanness—they ARE korean.
