@Misshilly__ I am interested. Looks like I can’t send you a message. Can you send me one?
English

@RickSchmidt263 @CollegeFBonX Cal is 5-2 all-time against Minnesota. Over those 7 games Cal has scored 251 points and Minnesota 137.

Just a great guy as well. Bracelin was another one. Maybe the best all around athlete I’ve ever known. Then there was a guy the year behind me that was a phenom. I was one of the guys who took him around during his recruiting trip: Holden Smith. He was a Parade AA HS football player, basketball player and baseball player. He ran the 100 meters in the Junior Olympics qualifier and started standing up, cause he never was a track guy. He finished 2nd. 9i didn’t believe it but I think most of it was true). I watched Wesley Walker run a 40 my freshman Spring for the pro scouts. No combines in those days. He was shot out of a cannon and ran a legit 4.3 on grass. Holden was faster. Another guy I admire is Joe Rose. He stuck with it and fought through a lot of adversity but came out very successful. Sad that Ralph Deloach, Duke Leffler and Pat Micco are no longer with us. All really wonderful Golden Bears.
English

@calgridiron @CalBearsHistory Yes, that is correct. I wanted 75 as a freshman…my high school number, but Duke had it. 72 was my second choice but I forget who had it my freshman year.
English

@bttr90809591 @CalBearsHistory Our records show Del Bunselmeir
English

@bttr90809591 @CalBearsHistory I have heard that about Tubby.
English

Great pictures. One of them has Duke Leffler, Jimmy Brazil, Pat Micco and Tubby Harrell. Tubby was in my freshman class and might’ve been the best player in that class. He started as a true freshman in the defensive backfield. The guy would’ve been a pro except he ended up getting meningitis which ended his whole career. Really sad because he was a phenomenal athlete and a really good guy.
English

@bttr90809591 @CalBearsHistory We have 72 listed for 1977. That’s incorrect, yes?
English

@bttr90809591 @CalBearsHistory Thank you for sharing this story.

I’ll tell you a great story about Joe Roth and the kind of person he was. My freshman spring in 76 somebody wanted to turn me into a center. I was a weak side tackle. Jim Erkenbeck was the o-line coach at the time. I hated the center position and I was not good at it. Out of all the quarterbacks the guy who would take the time after practice to take snaps from me was Joe. Freddie Besana would do it once in a while, but none of the other younger quarterbacks had the time for me. Joe was just that kind of guy, humble as hell and always willing to help out no matter who you were even some little freshman nobody.
English

I was there, from day one in camp that was held at St. Mary’s till we beat Stanfurd by a then record score when Chuck Muncie ran over them. I was on scout team as a freshman with other red shirting o-linemen like Duke Leffler, Jimmy Brazil and Al Toena. Sophomore year I redshirted…you couldn’t redshirt as a freshman in those days. I didn’t see the field until 77.
English

@JAllmendinger1 @NickRolovich Correct. In 1965, Tom was the starting QB for WSU and as an 11 year old boy learning to play the game, Joe wanted to play QB just like his brother Tom. Tom taught Joe how to hold the ball, drop back in the pocket, and release the ball quickly. Joe wanted to be like Tom.
English

@calgridiron @CalFootball Do you have some resources about his story ? Wish to learn about it, didn't know him. Without looking up anything it feels like the Freddie Steinmark's story with the Texas Longhorns.
English

@bttr90809591 @CalBearsHistory On our records, 74 was blank that year so we made an assumption. We have jersey number information going back to 1912. That’s a pretty accurate list. Thanks for the info.
English

No. That was Bob Smiland. 74 was his number in 1974, but he was out with an injury in 75, so as the lone freshman o-lineman,I got the number. Like a lot of my freshman class, I did not suit up for games freshman year. The few that did were Paul Jones, Daryl Skaugstad, Craig Watkins, perhaps Ralph Deloach, Tubby Harrell, and Greg Bracelin. I’m sure I’m probably missing a few as well.
English

@bttr90809591 @CalBearsHistory What number did you wear?
English

@CalBearsHistory I played with him. I was a freshman on the 1975 team, his first year at CAL. He was an amazing person. Incredibly humble and always willing to help a teammate, even a freshman nobody.
