Cheering for TikTok being banned is shortsighted. Just because it doesn’t affect you personally doesn’t make government overreach acceptable. What if your favorite platform was next? Once we start accepting this kind of authoritarian control, where does it end? Defending freedom means standing against censorship, even when it targets something you don’t care about. The government justified the ban on the grounds of national security, claiming that China was harvesting our data and could potentially share it with their government due to their laws. While I understand the concern, it’s hard to take that reasoning seriously when the government doesn’t hold American companies like Google and Meta accountable for their own rampant data harvesting. If we’re cracking down on privacy violations, it should apply across the board, not selectively. It really makes you wonder—was the ban ever truly about data protection, or is it more about silencing and controlling platforms that allow for freer, more open forms of expression? 🤔
