This is in Charleston. The man is on his knee, speaking and peacefully protesting. The police suddenly break line, walk over and arrest him.

@MayorJenny Today you said “dialog is better” but you don’t seem to realize that protests start dialog. The people want your ear, won’t you listen? All I hear so far is complaining about the property damage.

Worth repeating that all of the police violence you see happening right now has been happening for a long time before there were any camera phones to record it. It’s a daily phenomenon in communities across the country. It’s structurally embedded into how these forces operate.

@GovInslee The police are inciting fear, don’t you get that? Police are causing the violence in these peaceful protests, all across the country. The police are the danger.

I fully support the right to free speech and peaceful assembly. I applaud every Washingtonian standing for what they believe in, but we must do so in a way that allows space for these important and necessary discussions, not in a way that inspires fear.

As people gather today to protest the unjust death of George Floyd, I hope they do so peacefully and safely. Everyone has the freedom - and the right - to demonstrate and speak their mind. However, violence and destruction have no place in Washington state or our country.
