The kick-off meeting for the CCICED Special Policy Study (SPS) on "Developing a New Power System Aligned with Wind and Solar Targets" was held on March 30 The team discussed China's urgent need for a new energy system to handle its massive growth in wind and solar energy. Driven by climate goals and global security concerns, experts view the transition as a strategically necessity. However, with renewable capacity exceeding 50% locally, the traditional grid faces stability and excess power risks.

The kick-off meeting for the CCICED Special Policy Study on "Green and Just Transition for Traditional Energy Regions" was held on March 27. The team reaffirmed its focus on China's "Coal Triangle" region, which accounts for over 70% of the country's coal output. Long-term vision shapes lasting impact. In 2015, CCICED recommended that China start research on an Environmental Code — to address inconsistencies across laws and build a more coherent legal framework. In 2016, CCICED went further, proposing concrete steps: ✅Develop a national Environmental Code ✅Embed environmental rights in the Constitution ✅Phase feasibility studies into legislative planning Throughout the development of the Ecological and Environmental Code, CCICED's work continued: in 2024 and 2025, the Council provided recommendations on how to align the Code with related regulations to strengthen the legal system for a green, low-carbon future. The kick-off meeting covered the background, objectives, working structures, plans, and quality requirements needed for the final report. Discussions covered areas such as green shipping, marine tourism, #marine #biodiversity (in the context of BBNJ), and ocean-based solutions for carbon neutrality.

CCICED’s Special Policy Study (#SPS) on “Sustainable Ocean Management under the Vision of Carbon Neutrality” held its kick-off meeting online on January 29. The #Ocean SPS aims to identify governance models, financing mechanisms, #greentechnologies, and industry synergies that can accelerate the shift to a sustainable #blueeconomy in China, including contributions to the #carbonneutrality goals.

The meeting explored the HLTF’s 2026 work plan, a first draft outline of the synthesis report, and interim research findings, while the four Working Groups also presented their plans for the year and held in-depth discussions. The HLTF agreed to use qualitative and quantitative methods and adopt an economic, social, and #environmental lens across all workstreams.

CCICED’s High-Level Task Force (HLTF) held a meeting in Beijing and online from February 2 to 3, to take stock of progress and plans for the year. Xie Zhenhua and Achim Steiner @ASteiner, the HLTF's Co-Chairs and both CCICED Vice Chairs, delivered opening remarks.
