Well, might as well add my idea to the the various anti-tanking ideas out there. Introducing the **Rotating Position-Based Lottery** This proposal eliminates tanking by severing the link between regular season losses and draft lottery odds.

@timecaptales I share his opinion of the H Potter. But I think he was dead wrong to dismiss the "at least children are reading" argument. Reading is an incredibly important skill for navigating our complex world. Improving one's reading skills is a big win, no matter the quality of the books.

@mattyglesias @brianbeutler Dems might be down on their own party, but doesn't seem to prevent them from coming out in droves to vote in various elections over the past year. Looks like they've been winning the bulk of winnable races, and some that didn't even look very winnable. Trump concentrates minds.

Had a good conversation about this @brianbeutler on the latest episode of Politix. His is view is that anti-Dem sentiment among Democrats is artificially depressing the Dem generic ballot so we can count on that converging on Trump's dismal approval ratings.
(((Harry Enten)))@ForecasterEnten

Congressional Dems' numbers with Dems are atrociously awful. (Even worse among all voters.) Most Dems (55%) think their party has the wrong priorities! Unlike 2006 or 2018, Dem leaders have a negative net approval with Dems! Schumer is on thin ice to hold his job next year.

Imagine being so deep in the MAGA cult you feel obligated to pretend that Bruce Springsteen’s music sucks and Kid Rock’s music is good. I gotta believe that’s the psychological breaking point for at least a few boomers out there.

@dilanesper No need to even pass a law. How many women of childbearing age—pregnant or not—are granted visas to enter US? Aside from a heavily vetted few, it's not a very big number if they're from countries whose nationals tend to overstay (ie poor countries). It's a microscopic issue.

@greggnunziata Sure but it's not bad policy. What's the downside? A VERY* modest uptick in population growth? Stopping the creation of a non-citizen underclass? Birthright citizenship has served our country well. *US is now experiencing unparalleled demographic stagnation.

My thoughts on draft lottery… Teams will always tank if they have even a small incentive. Moving towards a flatter lottery has already proven to be a complete failure. Option A: Completely flat lottery. All 30 teams get equal odds. You can still trade picks. Option B: Allow teams to treat incoming talent like free agents. Small market teams can offer more money (because they have cap space) and playing time

The NBA should learn from how well the MLB rule changes have gone… Offense gets ball back on intentional fouls Call flops and make them technicals Only review objective plays International goaltending Bring back hand check 1 timeout per quarter No draft lottery

@HeathMayo I wish that were the case, but the GOP has been a nasty bunch of thugs for the past decade, and it doesn't seem to have done them much harm. If they get clobbered over the next two cycles, it will be due to policy disasters, and smart campaigns by Democrats.

Does the GOP not realize that no decent person wants to associate with people who act this way in public? The brand is toxic. This is all they know now.

I expect at least 5-10 states follow Maine with data center bans, and maybe up to half of states. At first, it’s a feel good and no cost act (a few property owners and trade workers are hurt, vocal citizens are happy). Over time, costs will build up as manufacturing companies will need to be automated and be located near DCs, and specialized industries like robotics and chip fabs will need more local compute, and the clusters of workers who need DCs. All the west coast internet companies required local DCs from California to Washington. Over a few decades, this move will be seen as banning the internet, but worse (and guess what - the internet runs on data centers, but the whole modern economy will too). Personally I’m glad it’s Maine running this experiment, not an important US state like NY (though they may follow).

@jerrythornton Well the Patriots are not in Boston, so you have to count all of Mass...and if you do that, you have to count all of New York, and the Giants and Jets play in NJ, the Islanders do not play in NYC.

@mr_saltz If Shapiro were running mate, Trump still wins that election, and probably still wins Pennsylvania. Though the Dems might have held onto that Senate seat. (And if Harris does win PA, that means Trump wins 6 out of 7 swings states instead of 7 of 7.)

@hasanthehun Democrats have been winning every election in sight since Trump took office. People are gonna say what they say when they talk to pollsters. But the revealed preference of politics, elections, suggests Dems (despite the incessant bitching from leftists) are on the right track.

They’ve lost their collective minds in the MA state legislature. Americans can’t afford rent but let’s give out even more taxpayer money to pay for lawyers to fight lawful deportations of illegal migrants, including those who’ve also committed heinous crimes after crossing the border illegally. Pure insanity.

@MattBoxer94 Don't know about Iowa, but Platner has been consistently beating Collins in head-to-head polls. He seems to be the more prudent choice If one prioritizes taking back a Senate majority for Democrats. I'm gonna guess that probably doesn't describe you.

@travishelwig Disaster is MASSIVELY overstating it. In worst case scenario CA is stuck with a GOP governor who will have to govern like a moderate given the makeup of the legislature. And frankly, the emergence of a moderate GOP wing might not be terrible for the country in the post-Trump era.

Even my most tapped-in California Dem friends don't have a Governor candidate they love. Folks have fully tuned out this election, and the lower-polling candidates are selfishly staying in the race. Truly feels like a disaster brewing if the party can't get people to drop out.
