While hospitals do employ midwives in the US, the care structure is set up very differently here. It’s not that there aren’t delivering midwifery practices, they just aren’t as common. The standard here is generally obstetric care.

They can prescribe. They are responsible for care from booking until about 2 wks after birth. At Home, in hospital and midwife units

I mailed a picture of me delivering twins to the OBGYN who delivered me 26 years ago and said hey, a baby you delivered is now delivering babies! He googled me, called my residency program coordinator, and then we talked on the phone as colleagues for almost 40 min. #obgyntwitter

@shazm0 @AckertKathleen The midwife certification is rare here in the US, most hospital deliveries in the US are by Obstetricians as that is what is covered by health insurance. If I wanted to hire a certified midwife in my area to deliver my baby at home then it would have cost me thousands of dollars.

@AckertKathleen Do all American babies get delivered by doctors? I realise this is not relevant to the spirit of the post, just curious. Babies in the UK are mostly delivered by midwives.
