Does anyone in Europe have an axenic or monoxenic culture of Stentor, Blepharisma or Spirostomum they would be willing to share? Please DM me :)

This story started 5y ago with my lab. Spearheaded by fearless 1st authors @theopi and Olivia Leland. Theopi is now a PhD student at @BrownUniversity. Olivia is a physics PhD student at @BrandeisU, a self-taught biologist, and made us love soft matter. A (very long) thread (1/24)

Postdoc position available to work with me, in collaboration with Chris Lane @LaneLabURI, on Nephromyces, the closest non-parasitic, extracellular symbiont relatives of the blood parasites (Plasmodium et al). How did the business of blood parasitism start? jobs.cam.ac.uk/job/48203/

After 9 years abroad I am thrilled to announce I am returning to Spain to start my own line of research as a Ramón y Cajal fellow. You can find me at the ecology department of the University of Granada @CanalUGR working on heterotrophic flagellates and light sensing. More soon!

I'm looking for advice on synthesizing a small molecule(<200 Da) organic molecule that is not commercially available. Any advice on companies we could use to synthesize this for us? There are published protocols, but we are not chemists and other extraction methods seem tedious.

@DocDellaire Seems like such a boring project for a student (the synthesis has been published before), but i get what you mean. For our purpose needing an MS standard, I think its better to save someone the boredom and see if we can commission its synthesis. :) thanks for your thoughts!

@cstairs Write a grant - get funding to do that including a chemist. It is the manpower involved that is the sticking point for academic chemists synthesizing things. It basically has to be someone grad project. In the end, probably easier to pay for a commercial source.

Great 🧵 by @andrewjroger summarising the PhD work of @retortacarp characterising another (probably) amitochondriate lineage. The paper has everything! great genomes, the best FeS cluster system, and beautiful images by @PsiWavefunction (check out the bonus preprint at the end).

Can free-living eukaryotes exist without mitochondria? In a new paper from my group led by @retortacarp, we show that the answer is probably yes! nature.com/articles/s4146…
