“When you engage in actual fighting, if victory is long in coming, then men’s weapons will grow dull and their ardor will be damped. If you lay siege to a town, you will exhaust your strength. Again, if the campaign is protracted, the resources of the State will not be equal to the strain. Now, when your weapons are dulled, your ardor damped, your strength exhausted and your treasure spent, other chieftains will spring up to take advantage of your extremity. Then no man, however wise, will be able to avert the consequences that must ensue. Thus, though we have heard of stupid haste in war, cleverness has never been seen associated with long delays. There is no instance of a country having benefited from prolonged warfare.” Sun Tzu – The Art of War

The tone of the Rubio handout on the Jaishankar call is reminiscent of how the US used to deal with any minor protests Pakistan made during the GWOT. Curt dismissal, as if lives lost there simply didn’t matter.

As Sudip Bandyopadhyay has now joined the rebel camp, I wanted to reshare this old column of mine for TOI. For one reason. In the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, Mamata Banerjee denied the sitting MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay a ticket from Calcutta North West (now Kolkata North), the constituency he currently represents as an MP. She reportedly asked him to shift to Raiganj, while the TMC ticket for Calcutta North West went to Subrata Mukherjee. Sudip chose to rebel. He reached an understanding with the Congress and contested from the same seat as an independent candidate backed by the Congress. The TMC eventually lost the seat. Yet, in time, he returned to the party. This is what makes the current developments significant. Mamata Banerjee was never unaware of the ambitions, insecurities, and tendencies of many of these leaders. She had seen them up close, often from the party’s most difficult phases. But instead of confronting these contradictions, she repeatedly accommodated them, trusted them, and elevated them to important positions, perhaps believing that responsibility and recognition would bring stability and loyalty. It did not. The individuals changed their circumstances, but not necessarily their political instincts. That is why I continue to argue that Mamata’s biggest political crisis has often been of her own making. Not because she failed to identify the problem, but because she chose to manage it through accommodation rather than resolution. “Mamata’s biggest crisis is Mamata.”

Two wars, a major anti-government uprising, the first transition in its highest post since 1989, and, it seems, a deal(ish) with the U.S. A year that has - by any measure - been historic for the Islamic Republic. 🧵

Told @CNN: “The authority, influence, and institutional significance of the presidency have declined considerably since after the Rouhani era...Today, both the president as an individual and the administration as an institution are largely confined to implementing decisions that are made elsewhere – particularly within the Supreme National Security Council.” edition.cnn.com/2026/06/12/mid…

Did I not say a few days ago that Sharjeel (and people like him) are genuinely stupid? WB Muslims felt no consequences of what was happening literally next door, despite state being swamped with Hindu refugees. Wonder why. CPM as bad as BJP saaarrr
Riaa@hathiaursathi

Sachar C reported that wb had the worst performing index of Muslims in govt jobs & undertakings. Sharjeel imam also wrote on how left had done absolutely nothing for them. It was tmc who got Muslims under obc reservation. So, ei wb left M hitoishi concept ta kotha theke elo.

@bong123457 @AnonDehlvi Yea, nobody is denying there was an anti minority component as well, but it is a fact that more Bengali Muslims died.

@AnonDehlvi Left pretty much shot bullets at everyone. And Marijchapi was 6 yrs later. Left's large base of support was refugees, Marijchapi was an abberation.

@cynicoidAlt People think riots are trivial, but what goes in preparing for riots is an attack on property riots even when no actual violence takes place. Fwiw left has made political choices where they shot bullets at the incoming refugees, but prorected Muslims. Uske baad yeh bakchodi?

@AnonDehlvi I think more to do with the fact that GOI had seen what had happened in 1950 and 1964 and were prepared properly this time around. Post-Babri riots in 1992 in Kolkata and other parts. is an abberation however.

@cynicoidAlt @AnonDehlvi The fact that no riots happened in west bengal when in every durga puja Bangladesh performed their annual malaun killing festival proved him right. In WB people still believe Pakistani Army conducted genocide against bengalis not bengali hindus proved him right.
