So glad someone asked 🤓 So the shape to Goyang’s stadium plays a huge role in this. Sound waves move in concentric circles from source in ripples. So when you’re inside the stadium, sound starts moving away from its sources aka the speakers and the crowd, getting absorbed into air etc and it gets lost. And there’s 2 natural phenomenon that occurs within your own body as you’re part of the crowd that mutes or silences your auditory pick up. One is bc your auditory capacity has a ceiling. Once the noise around you hits that ceiling, even when it gets louder you can’t perceive it. It becomes muddled to you. It’s a neural silencing. 2nd, is the Lombard effect or the shouting reflex. Basically, we have an involuntary reflex where when our surroundings get louder, we automatically start raising our voices. That’s what’s happening when you’re inside the stadium. The speakers are loud. The crowd is loud. You’re trying to get louder. And that distracts you from perceiving how loud everything is. But outside the stadium is where it gets interesting. Although, the sound is moving away from its source, there are multiple circles of sound from every speaker and human being bouncing of each other outwards, carrying the sound wave without losing its depth. And then the bowl shape of Goyang acts like a megaphone for these sound waves as they travel up and out. Then the curvature of the opening of the roof, allows the sound waves to bounce and direct outwards into various angles. So, when you are outside the stadium, sound is coming towards you as opposed to it being around you. Your background baseline is quieter than someone who is inside the stadium. And that is why those who were inside Goyang could possibly feel like “oh I didn’t think we were that loud” until you’re watching a clip or watch a pov from outside the stadium. I’m too much of a nerd for this space sometimes. But I hope this helps 💜
