I also see commenters saying: making friends, especially in a new place, requires a lot of effort

Seems like a great idea to be clear and communicative about how we can reciprocate research/academic help at the time we ask for it. Especially if the ask is directed at someone upon whom society tends to impose more expectations of free labor (incl. women, POC)
