I can't wait for this book by @ConferringCarl to be available in June. I was just in a school that had multiple units on writing fantasy and the impact on engagement was obvious. This book is the perfect support! us.corwin.com/books/teaching…

Happy 20th Birthday to my 1st book, Border Crossing! Thank you to everyone who has bought, checked-out or read the book. I wrote it when there were no books that represented my lived experience as a child, before #ownvoices. I am thrilled there are so many more now.

I'd love your help. I'm trying to describe a way of observing students experience in the classroom. Which term do you like better: "Close Watch" or "Empathy Watch?"

Thank you @danfeigelson for joining #ShelfieTalk tonight and deepening our understanding of the power of conferences as ongoing authentic conversations. We hope you'll visit us here in New Brunswick someday so we can share our beautiful province with you!

@MrsCSoucy Agreed. Thinking ahead about what sort of faces will walk into your room, and ordering books that reflect those faces, is SO important. As Sims-Bishop reminds us, we want to provide kids with mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors. #shelfietalk

A8 The list is too long! Discover identities, book talk a variety of topics/genres/formats, use a variety of mentor texts to inspire writing & craft study, explore Sora/Overdrive, talk about reading/writing, share your reading/writing, set goals, build TBR piles etc. #shelfietalk

@sonjawright My thought partners Carl Anderson and Penny Kittle have both written wonderful books on mentor texts, with many suggestions for specific texts. I highly recommend! #shelfietalk

@meikljea Interestingly, I heard from many teachers I work with that conferring felt like the only thing that worked for them during COVID. Kids (and teachers) were longing for connection, and somehow the whole class lessons weren't doing it. #shelfietalk

Thank you Dan! You have deepened my thinking about how I can build my students up in a positive and engaging way. After Covid I am seeing so many students lacking in confidence and belief in themselves. This way I can I listen and see what they are doing and trying. #shelfietalk

@ShelfieTalk @LaurenCormier11 Thinking of a series of conferences this way makes it a.) easier for the teacher (you don't have to invent the wheel each time), and b.) makes the learning feel more continuous for the student. #shelfietalk

A7: Thank you @danfeigelson you have deepened my thinking about how much we can impact learning simply by listening, and how to use our conferences to make sure we are being responsive to the many diverse readers and writers in our classrooms. #shelfietalk

@MeganYJ38 It's important 2 keep notes of what you talk abt from conf 2 conf. Even if u have a photographic memory, u won't remember that particular phrase/word choice a kid used 2 weeks ago. If you want 2 see a kid's face brighten, quote back 2 them what they said last month! #shelfietalk

A6. I loved the variety of eg to track your conf. I have yet to find a method that I like but these look fantastic! I esp. like that students leave the conf. with a specific purpose that you can revisit during the next conf. #ShelfieTalk

@SiebenLauren Yes! As I write about in Ch 5, for any teaching point in a writing conference, there is a parallel point to be made in reading. When we keep careful notes and remember to make that point in the next rdg or wtg conference, the learning can be powerful. #shelfietalk

A5: one thing I find magical about “reading like a writer” is when the kids get to see that things they are seeing in their own reading, is possible in their writing too! The interconnection between the two can grow both readers and writers immensely #shelfietalk

@MeganYJ38 Thanks 4 your honesty, Megan. It's scary at first & you will sometimes fall on your face, but ultimately it's these convos kids remember in years to come. Teachers are often the first adults in children's lives (besides their parents) who care about their thinking. #shelfietalk

A5. I think the key to this is going on with an open mind and letting the student guide were the conf. goes. I’ll admit, this is a bit scary to me, but it opens the door for those organic connections between an author’s craft and their writing. #ShelfieTalk
