Fire departments love to brag on their apparatus, like how this (100% custom-built!) ladder for their downtown station is 80,000 lbs. A single passage of this truck exerts the same pavement damage as 37,000 passenger vehicles. Each time it rolls out for the ~98.5% of calls that aren’t fires, or it’s acting as basic medical response (~85% of calls) with 4 firefighters and 500 gallons of water - 37,000 passenger vehicles in damage, each way. Every 100 calls is the equivalent cost for repair, resurfacing, etc as 3.7 million passenger vehicle trips, before adjusting expenses even higher for the wider streets fire departments demand and increased stormwater management this must be sized for on every street and parking lot, across a city. The variety of ways in which failing to right-size apparatus and properly allocate equipment to actual need drives up costs in our cities is almost never-ending.

BREAKING: Sugars essential for life have been found in pristine asteroid Bennu samples collected by NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft. Combined with previous detections of amino acids and nucleobases, we see that life’s ingredients were widespread throughout the solar system: go.nasa.gov/48MTu9i More on the study led by Yoshihiro Furukawa of @TohokuUniPR⤵️
