New paper on the distorting effect of intergroup bias on language use. We looked at the happiness of words people use to describe an in- vs out-group. People tend to inflate the positive regard for the in-group vs amplify their derogation of the out-group rdcu.be/dEHID

Our World in Data
Our World in Data@OurWorldInData·
In 1820, only 1 in 10 people over the age of 15 could read. Today, the corresponding global literacy rate — the share of adults aged 15 and older who can read and write — is 87%. That means more than 5 billion people can read and write today, compared to fewer than 100 million two centuries ago. The chart shows the rising global literacy rate over time. The data combines historical estimates from academic historians with more recent statistics from UNESCO. As we can see, widespread literacy is a recent achievement. This trend underlines a huge achievement, but it’s important to remember that there’s still much progress ahead of us. In many schools, children learn very little, and many still do not attend school. This Data Insight was written by @EOrtizOspina.

He made it harder to ignore our own ignorance, and that is no mean achievement. RIP, Daniel Kahneman (1934-2024)

Really enjoyed day 1 of @LaurenFink_PhD ‘s workshop “Learning Pupillometry: From Theory to Analyses”. Learned a lot about neurobiology of pupil dilation response, analysis techniques, and… the potential for eye-movement recording of seals 🦭

New paper with Seina Yamada and Anna Moro on bridging program EAL students. What predicts their GPAs after the program? Random forest model ranked importance of 20+ reading and literacy skills. Gains in reading speed (eye movements 👁️) near the top link.springer.com/article/10.100…

🚨 #NewPaper We asked 140+ English learners to fill out a reading habits log each week over 26 weeks of English instruction. We found that they became more efficient readers and that those who read more than their peers made greater gains in reading speed frontiersin.org/articles/10.33…

A new postdoc position in the @CrepaldiLab at @Sissaschool! The post is for 21 months, starting ideally in Feb/Mar 24. We'll research statistical learning and reading, with a flexible research agenda - from neuroimaging to computational modeling. DM me for details on the project.

Traces of L2 reading development can be detected over 3 years after language instruction 💡 @danschmidtke presents "Investigating the Long-Term Effects of Reading Ability Growth During L2 Instruction on Subsequent Reading Skill: a Longitudinal Eye-Tracking Study" #psynom23

Fellow reading/L2/education researchers. I’m looking for some advice on where to submit an ms. I wrote a paper on which language variables (vocab, reading rate, etc.) predict future GPAs of ESLs who went thru a bridging program. Having trouble finding a journal that’ll take it.

@danschmidtke @mac_readinglab How about "Language Learning" and "Studies in Second Language Acquisition", the most esteemed journals in the field? If you focus on reading, I also suggest "Reading in a Foreign Language", an open-access journal, as one of the editorial board members😉
