@simoneverest @GillElderfield @thornburysaint Thanks for everything you've done Simon! You're one of the last of the of GDS Founders and you've done so much for services across government. You will be sorely missed but new and exciting things await you (in a good way ;-)) At DCMS. All the best and hopefully speak soon.

@adrianbowyer @Hellhound604 If the mains fuse blows there's no potential energy left in my house. With a battery there's still a lot of chemical potential energy so hopefully the fault isn't something that could still activate it (temperature? metal rebar falling down?).

@MarkWheadon @adrianbowyer It's the Ah/g value that matters, not the grammes themselves. i.e. You get more capacity for the same weight compared to Li-Ion.

Someone just robbed Waitrose whilst I was at the till paying for my lunch. The cashier raised his eyebrow at the monitor but couldn't do much There were lots of middle-class cries of "He's stolen the Prosecco" from over by the door.

@amadeuspzs @TheRealRevK I'm unsure tbh. ...or at least no more knowledgable that you! Are you finding that it's more sensitive to PCB placement than to overall placement of the device in the room?

@TheRealRevK @databasescaling do you know best practice for temp sensor mounting (both on PCB and PCB location) for thermostat? Noticed placing near ext. wall, fireplace marble etc. totally skews readings and control of heating etc. Thinking mounting on little stick?!

There's every reason for providers being able to provide energy *cheaper* for prepay customers because they don't have to hedge the markets as much and have more committed buying power that they can plan for. The promise of smart meters being "cheaper"/"better" is not born out.

Prepay is traditionally more expensive but in this model there's absolutely no reason why it should be. There's no extra meter to buy & no increase in infrastructure or billing costs for the provider. ...and the provider also has ahead-of-time knowledge of how much energy to buy.

Some of us have been predicting the rise of "remote disconnect via smart meter" for some time but this is even more insidious and wrong: "Rise in energy firms remotely switching homes to prepay meters" bbc.co.uk/news/business-…

@grifferz Incredible! You'd think they'd do it at the DKIM level as that's designed for managing exactly this kind of identity-bound-reputation stuff!

Apparently these IP-level blocks are the default now; they are not used after any observed abusive behaviour; they are what you get unless you ask to be allowlisted and that is approved.

Deutsche Telekom are now default blocking email from ALL non-allowlisted IPs at the IP level. Which means that @BitFolk's mail server for the main domain, our mailing lists and our support system can't communicate with anyone a t-online address (amongst others).

The Tripitaka Koreana - carved on 81258 woodblocks in the 13th century - is the most successful large data transfer over time yet achieved by humankind. 52 million characters of information, transmitted over nearly 8 centuries with zero data loss - an unequalled achievement. 1/
