The Next Generation of the Consumer Rebalance Protocol is here—KIP-848 is now live in Confluent Cloud! This protocol, first available in #ApacheKafka 4.0, transforms consumer group rebalances by shifting to a server-driven, incremental approach. That means: ⏱️ No more stop-the-world rebalances and minimal downtime 📈 Greater stability and scalability, especially with large consumer groups 🔧 Simplified configuration and enhanced monitoring Want the full breakdown? Learn all about KIP-848 on our blog: confluent.io/blog/kip-848-c…

Proud to have contributed formal verification (TLA+) for three key improvements in Kafka 4.0: ✅ KIP-966: Strengthens the replication protocol. ✅ KIP-996: Introduces PreVote for more stable KRaft leadership. ✅ KIP-848: Delivers more efficient, predictable rebalancing.

Apache Kafka 4.0 is OUT. and Zookeeper is OUT (of Kafka). KRaft is the default in Kafka now and a bunch of other improvements and features. My favourite is Queuing support in Kafka. 🚀 I have missed this feature a lot, which has resulted in complexity, because queuing semantics are powerful for many applications and having it within Kafka gets rid of one additional dependency. I did a podcast with @davidjacot on #kafka internals and it is one of the most viewed episodes on The GeekNarrator. We talked about how Zookeeper becomes a bottleneck and how KRaft solves it. Give it a watch if you want to learn deep Kafka internals. Link below 👇

The difference between Kafka 4.0 and 3.0 will be awesome: - No ZooKeeper - Tiered Storage - New Rebalance Protocol (848) - EOS support in Connect - State Updater Thread in Streams - Improved Txn Protocol (890) - Custom Stream Task Assignment (924) #apachekafka is on a roll!

1/ There is a mini open source drama, this time because RedPanda, a company with a source-available Apache Kafka clone, bought an open source connector framework and made licensing and trademark changes to thwart other startup competition. (a thread) news.ycombinator.com/item?id=405379…

I just published edition 71 of my Kafka Monthly Digest. It covers the recent releases, KIPs, community projects and blogs. Also as is customary, I review some of the milestones the #ApacheKafka project achieved in 2023 and make some predictions for 2024! developers.redhat.com/blog/2023/12/2…
