The average arc raider's stash
Science girl@sciencegirl
In 1992, a cargo ship lost a container in the Pacific Ocean carrying about 28,800 toys, including rubber ducks. Over the following years, the toys washed up on coastlines around the world. Their movements helped scientists track ocean currents

Five years ago this week, we launched @VALORANT, a tac shooter built by a team with a deep love for the genre and a bold vision for what the future of competitive shooters could be.
Internally, it was known as Ares, originally a passion project driven by @slimborama and a small team of hardcore devs who believed Riot could elevate everything they loved about tac shooters for a new generation of players. We knew that players in this genre had incredibly high expectations, and we wanted to meet them with the depth, precision, and competitive integrity they deserved. But we also believed there were players out there who hadn’t fallen in love with tac shooters (yet) who should and would love them if we could make the experience more inviting without sacrificing the things that make the genre great.
The team believed that tac shooter players needed improvements on many parts of the experience that become pain points after hundreds of hours of play: great anti-cheat (Vanguard), improved server and network responsiveness (128-tick servers), aspirational characters with unique kits designed to enhance gunplay and raise the skill ceiling, and a global esports ecosystem where the best could compete to be the best.
That vision grew, and so did the team. Grateful to and proud of @RiotSuperCakes for building the production team and leading with a vision for the players, the community, the IP, and the cultural force VALORANT could become. Her leadership helped shape what VALORANT is today and continues to guide what it’s becoming.
Since launch, VALORANT has continued to grow and push forward. We’ve brought it to console. Mobile is on the way. And around the world, players have made it their own through competition, creativity, and community. And while we’re focused on continuing to improve the core VAL experience, we’re also thinking seriously about where else this IP can go in games, in other creative, and in ways that connect even more deeply with players.
From the OG Ares team led by Slim, to the launch and production team built and still led by Anna, to the continued leadership of Andy on the core game, the future of VALORANT is very bright. This team is firing on all cylinders: still dreaming big, still building with care, and still building for the players who make it all worth it.
The impact of VALORANT reinforces why we do this. Why we fight, you might say. Rioters aren’t here to chase trends, we’re here to fight for moments that matter for players. We take risks and we won’t get it all right, but we learn and improve. And we stay in it for the long haul, because that’s what it takes to deliver special experiences to players.
Happy 5 years, VAL. Here's to what’s next. GG.
