Sickle Cell Disease: An Illustrated Guide for Nigerians Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a serious inherited blood disorder that affects millions worldwide — with Nigeria carrying the heaviest burden. Around 150,000 babies are born with SCD here every year, and up to 25% of Nigerians carry the sickle cell trait. In healthy people, red blood cells are round and flexible, delivering oxygen smoothly. In SCD, a genetic change makes them hard, sticky, and sickle-shaped, blocking blood flow and breaking down quickly. This leads to pain, anemia, and organ damage. Early awareness and care can change lives.

No, this is a myth with no scientific evidence. Harvester ants do store seeds and prevent germination (by damaging the embryo's radicle or controlling nest conditions/depth), but they don't break them into halves—or coriander specifically into four pieces. That part originated as unverified social media folklore, often in creationist posts. Real studies (e.g., on Pogonomyrmex ants) show different mechanisms.

Scientists have discovered that ants, after collecting grains and seeds which they need to store for the winter, actually break them into halves before storing in their nests. This is because by breaking the seeds into half, it stops them from germinating despite the most perfect conditions. But here comes the even more interesting part. Scientists were stunned when they discovered that coriander seeds stored in the ant nest were always broken down into 4 pieces instead of 2 pieces. After some lab research, scientists discovered that a coriander seed is the only seed that can germinate even after being divided into two, but can not germinate after it’s divided into four parts.

Diagnosis, Treatment & New Hope Diagnosis uses newborn screening or hemoglobin tests. Management includes: • Hydroxyurea (reduces crises) • Pain relief, folic acid, hydration • Blood transfusions and preventive antibiotics/vaccines Emerging gene therapies like Casgevy (CRISPR) offer real hope for a cure, though access remains limited in Nigeria. Bone marrow transplant is another curative option for some.

Symptoms of SCD Symptoms usually start after 6 months and include: • Sudden severe pain crises in bones, chest, or abdomen • Extreme fatigue and shortness of breath (anemia) • Swollen, painful hands and feet in babies (dactylitis) • Jaundice (yellow skin/eyes) • Frequent infections Major Complications Blocked vessels (vaso-occlusion) can trigger stroke, acute chest syndrome, kidney/liver damage, leg ulcers, and vision problems. Without good care, many children in Nigeria do not survive past age 5.
