Today in History On May 1 1931 the Empire State Building opened to the public. Constructed in just 13 months, the 102 story tower was the tallest building in America. It became a pop culture icon in films and a symbol of the power of #NewYorkCity.

In 1984, a woman in the UK was treated for auditory hallucinations (hearing voices). During this period, the voices told her she had a brain tumour and were medically specific and urged her to have a scan. Although she had no obvious neurological symptoms, her psychiatrist ordered a CT scan, mainly to reassure her. The scan unexpectedly revealed a meningioma (a type of brain tumour). The tumour was surgically removed, and the hallucinations reportedly stopped. The case was later described in the British Medical Journal.
