Not how it works! You have to carry a player in all 12 roster spots under the new WNBA CBA. Therefore, the valks did not acquire 300k in cap space by making the trade, they acquired 308k minus the vet minimum salary for that cap space (278k) - for a grand total of 30k in space.

So as of today, the Valkyries traded the No. 8 pick for $300k in cap space + a 2nd round pick next year. I wouldn’t say the verdict is totally out on the trade yet. If the team uses that space to sign a high-level player, that could salvage it.

very obviously a money decision. i actually don’t fault the logic tbh. not tying yourself up with a player you don’t really want but have to pick bc you have a draft pick isn’t faulty logic at all. you just needed to get more for the 8th overall pick

@txscout844 @ShowCaseShabazz Year 1 salary for the #8 Pick this year is 308k. Year 1 Salary for all second and third round picks this year is 270k. There is a slight difference in guarantee date (First round picks will guarantee at break of camp, other drafted players do not guarantee until normal deadline)

@ShowCaseShabazz Only thing I can think of is the number eight pick in the first round may have been required to receive a higher base pay rate than trading that for a later pick. But I don't know that the difference between their contracts would have been that significant

If all 60 players drafted into the NBA each year make a roster, that's 11% of the league's roster spots being filled by new players each season . The W equivalent to this is 20 players making rosters. 24 players from the 2025 draft have debuted. (19 from 2024, 21 from 2023).

There are now 45 players drafted in a league with 180 roster spots. 25% of the league's available roster spots are drafted in any given year. The NBA has 540 roster spots (15+3 2ways per team). This is equivalent to every single year drafting 135 players into the NBA.

The WNBA drafts players and immediate can’t identify what that players does well. So instead of working with them they just cut them without hesitation lol

This logic doesn't make any sense at all.
The 8th overall pick makes 309k this year. The vet min is 270k for a rookie.
The Valks had exclusive negotiating rights on multiple reserved vets (salaun, zandalasini) and paid them 200k+ over the qualifying offer.

@SnackPr0tein About the only conclusion I can come up with is that they decided predraft that no one they thought would be available at 8 would make their roster, and just wanted to get a dev spot hopeful + future asset, but the math is just so dumb and awful, even before johnson falls...
