For a long time, food and medicines in this country were extremely toxic. Like, actually murderous.

One of the most poignant medieval documents was written on this day in 1429.
Written by Joan of Arc, it requested gunpowder from the citizens of Riom to support her military campaigns.
And at the end, for the first time, Joan signed her own name.

Today is Martinmas, the feast of St Martin of Tours, a major festival in medieval Europe on the cusp of winter. St Martin is the patron saint of soldiers; he's often shown on horseback, sharing his cloak with a poor man who was 'naked against the winter cold'.
