Albany International turns resin into engineered fibre in a precise, continuous process that keeps production lines running smoothly all over the world. As an official partner of World Engineering Day, the company is at the cutting edge of materials science, producing engineered fibre for industrial application. Its custom designed industrial fabric belts are essential for the manufacture of materials such as paper, cardboard, tissue, towel and pulp, using advanced materials processing and automation. Across their lifecycle, the planet’s roads emit up to 57 gigatons of CO2, similar to the world’s annual total of emissions. It is a huge problem we need a solution to. Yesterday we marked International Women’s Day by recognising the progress women have made across the engineering profession and the impact they continue to have across the industry. Over the past century, women have moved from being largely excluded from engineering education and professional institutions to becoming leaders in fields ranging from civil and mechanical engineering to digital technology, energy and infrastructure. Greater access to education, industry initiatives and continued advocacy for diversity have helped open pathways and strengthen representation across the profession. Women represent around 28 per cent of the global engineering workforce, according to UNESCO, and participation continues to rise across many regions. In several countries, women now make up more than one third of engineering graduates, strengthening the pipeline of skills and leadership entering the profession. That growth is expanding the field in meaningful ways. Broader representation increases the range of ideas at the table, strengthens collaboration, and supports more user centred design across sectors such as clean energy, infrastructure, digital systems and advanced manufacturing. Studies consistently link gender diverse teams with stronger financial performance and higher levels of innovation. In engineering environments, that translates into more resilient solutions and better outcomes for the communities those systems serve.
