3 things that help habits stick: 1) Repetition. Habits form based on frequency, not time. 2) Stable context. If the context is always changing, so is the behavior. You need a reliable environment. 3) Positive emotions. If it feels good, you’ll want to repeat it.

Building a team in esports is similar to building a team in any business. If you want it to be effective, you need to hire for both competency and cultural fit. One of my favourite performance models boils things down into just that; competency and the mental game. Culture can be seen as a collective mental game; the operational standards, values and vision that is shared by a team provides a source of motivation, resiliency, energy and creativity. When a team is in sync, it is a powerful driver for results. If you hire individuals that are not able to synchronize with this, their competency doesn't matter, as they will quickly poison the cultural well and no amount of skill will make up for this type of damage. As the well is poisoned, so too will the quality of output amongst those who work on your team. If one member doesn't follow the standards, the standards will begin to lose meaning and others will be more incentivized to drop their standards. As the standards collectively lose meaning, the identity of the team will start to dissolve. As the identity dissolves, so too will the vision and purpose. The final result? An underperforming, unmotivated and dejected team.

Faker is integral to T1’s ability to perform at a high level (we saw that when he was injured) I would assume, he provides a lot of the in game direction, shot calling and communication. I wonder if he would have a higher standard of individual play if he didn’t have to do as much in game. He had more teammates that could take the reins. Or His current skillset (because of experience) is more geared towards leveraging said experience to win games.

April no fools We need coaching certification requirements in esports every year. I am consistently shellshocked over the lack of understanding of the basics of what a coach is supposed to do, responsibilities, leading a team, leading a room etc. (hint: it’s not just teaching a game) I still take USA hockey classes because I learn more from them than anything that exists in esports. Especially when we are talking about minors there is no required certification or training to work with minors. I would be horrified as a parent about having my kid coached by an adult with no formal oversight.
