They have since spread to every corner of North America and now number in the hundreds of millions. House sparrows don't just compete with native cavity-nesting birds for nest boxes, they kill them. They will enter an occupied bluebird or tree swallow nest box, destroy the eggs, kill the nestlings, and kill the adult birds sitting on the nest. This is documented behavior, not an edge case. Cornell's NestWatch data shows nearly 10% of bluebird nest attempts are usurped by house sparrows. Eastern bluebirds, tree swallows, chickadees, and Carolina wrens have enough pressure on them already. When you put up a nest box and don't monitor it, there's a real chance you're providing a house sparrow breeding station that will be used to kill the neighbors you were trying to help. Because they're not native, house sparrows are not protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. It is legal to remove their nests. What experts recommend if you have nest boxes: Check them every few days during nesting season. A house sparrow nest is messy, domed, and full of debris. A bluebird nest is a tidy cup of fine grass. If you find house sparrow activity, remove it. You can also place boxes away from buildings. House sparrows are house sparrows: they stay near human structures. Bluebirds and swallows are happy in open fields. Monitor actively or don't put up a box. An unmonitored box in sparrow territory does more harm than no box at all. The bird you've been watching at your feeder your whole life is eating the bird you're trying to save.
