May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! We are highlighting members across the FDNY who embody this year's theme, "Power in Unity: Strengthening Communities Together."  Firefighter Amber Villegas, who works at Engine Company 308, says connection and consistency play a crucial role in building stronger relationships with the communities our members serve. This month, we thank Firefighter Villegas for her service and continued commitment to New York City.

Shortly before 11 a.m. Wednesday, FDNY Fire Marshals Jesse Collado and Michael Negron, while returning from a security detail related to the April 23 fire at a church in Astoria, monitored a report of a fire that came over Queens Fire Dispatch. Recognizing the location, Collado and Negron arrived at the scene and saw heavy smoke from the second floor of a two-story private dwelling. The fire marshals immediately transmitted updated conditions to the dispatcher and responding units. Upon arrival, they observed individuals attempting to remove a propane torch from the roof and leave the scene. Members quickly intervened and detained the individuals. A suspect was taken into custody. We commend the swift, decisive actions of Fire Marshals Collado and Negron, and their commitment to protecting life and property.

Shortly before 3 a.m. Thursday, the FDNY responded to a report of a fire at 107-55 130th Street in Queens. When units arrived, they encountered a private dwelling heavily involved in fire. "We immediately started conducting firefighting operations, stretched hoselines and protected the buildings next door. Due to the amount of the fire, we were not able to enter the fire building or conduct any searches," Chief of Department John Esposito said. "It's an ongoing scene, and we're going to be here throughout the day as we continue to conduct searches. It was an extremely dangerous operation for our firefighters." Several NYPD officers who responded to the scene suffered minor injuries following an explosion related to the fire. More than 300 fire and EMS personnel responded to the 5-alarm fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore
On Monday, I appointed Michael Kavanagh as the FDNY's Chief Fire Marshal. He will lead the Bureau of Fire Investigation's critical work, helping to uncover the causes of fires and supporting public safety across New York City. After serving as an NYPD Police Officer for two years, Chief Kavanagh joined the FDNY in 2001 and was assigned to Engine Company 39/Ladder Company 16 in Manhattan. He has dedicated his career to protecting New Yorkers and serving this great Department. As our Chief Fire Marshal, he will lead an outstanding group of fire marshals whose work is essential to the safety of the public and the members of the FDNY.

Clutter in your home is dangerous and can be deadly. The FDNY urges New Yorkers to always keep exits, hallways, and stairways clear of clutter and storage. Keeping exits clear will help you and your family escape during a fire, and it will help first responders quickly access your home during an emergency. Call 311 to report clutter or hoarding.
