@FabTet even without the formal university degree. Like I think the common thing in the UK would be to say “trained as a [scientist][historian]” to acknowledge the qualification? Because introductions are about current work/the present and qualifications may be many years/decades past.

@FabTet would not consider me one even though I have a PhD in chemistry. I’ve never actually heard these terms being exclusively attached to a qualification before and too me doesn’t seem right because someone doing the work for years as say a scientist deserves to call themselves that

I guess the difference would be say someone getting a tattoo of Fitzjames (the person) is fine but in depicting his mandible it’s both treating it like an object (incorrect, human remains) and as representative of a person (disrespectful, only his death)

@erebuspalooza @FabTet Nods nods. So I get the exposed part of a dead person reasoning. But with regards to dignity of death, how is it different to getting the likeness of someone dead? Both are artistic renditions. Assuming intention of tribute or acknowledgement of that person or story of the person

@FabTet @erebuspalooza I don’t vibe at all but I’m not sure quite how to reconcile it academically? Like I found out that there are tattoos of the Beechey Mummies so it’s not like a new phenomenon even for the Franklin Expedition. But is the jaw more/less/same as a dead persons face you don’t know?

@FabTet @erebuspalooza Purely on a discussion level, what do you guys think of tribute tattoos, especially of like celebrity or historical tattoos using people’s likenesses? And how do you guys differentiate between like those and the mandible? It’s something I’m rotating about cause on a persona level
