Cristiano Ronaldo has avoided a suspension for the start of next summer’s World Cup after FIFA handed the Portugal captain a three-match ban, with the final two games suspended for “a one-year probation period”. Ronaldo was sent off in Portugal’s penultimate World Cup qualifier against the Republic of Ireland for swinging an elbow at Dara O’Shea in an off-the-ball incident. The red card meant Ronaldo would automatically serve a one-game ban, ruling him out of Portugal’s final World Cup qualifier against Armenia, but the suspension was extended by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, who deemed the offence worthy of a longer three-game ban. However, the committee ruled that the final two matches of Ronaldo’s extended ban would be suspended “under a one-year probation period”, meaning he will avoid missing any further fixtures provided he does not commit “another infringement of a similar nature”. 🔗 nytimes.com/athletic/68095…

La Liga want to stage December’s scheduled domestic league fixture between Villarreal and Barcelona in Miami. According to multiple sources familiar with the discussions, who asked to remain anonymous to protect relationships, the Spanish top-flight league have held preliminary discussions to relocate the fixture, which would ordinarily take place at Villarreal’s Estadio de la Ceramica home in eastern Spain, to instead be staged in Florida. It would be the first time a European top-flight league fixture has taken place in the United States. Full story from @AdamCrafton_ and @polballus ⬇️ 🔗 nytimes.com/athletic/65451…

Good news: interest rates have been cut five times since we came into government. Homebuyers are £1000 better off on their mortgages than they were a year ago. That's our Plan for Change in action.

Was at the Spectator summer party this evening and when the story broke that Sultana and Corbyn are starting a new party of the left there was a cheer from some of the Reform figures. “They’ll take 10% of Labour’s vote,” said one. news.sky.com/story/politics…

🗣️ Some personal news, as the cliche goes: I’m thrilled to be joining @thetimes in December as leader writer and columnist. Since reading the Funday Times at the age of six, it’s the paper I’ve dreamed of writing for. Couldn’t be a better moment to get stuck into the big debates.
