💔Yesterday I spoke with a young woman who uses the supervised consumption site that’s being shut down. She looked at me and said, “Where do people expect me to go now? Why do people hate us so much?” That question has been sitting heavy with me. I told her the truth — that people do care, that she matters, that her life is worth protecting. She won’t go to the other site, because she doesn’t feel safe going into the Downtown Eastside. So now, like so many others, she’s being pushed into using alone. Supervised consumption sites don’t create addiction, they prevent death. They keep people alive long enough to access healthcare, support, and recovery. Closing them doesn’t solve anything. It just makes the crisis more dangerous, more visible, and more deadly. WHAT A CRUEL WORLD SOMETIMES.
