The most important thing Valve is doing has nothing to do with hardware. Proliferation of Steam OS as a replacement for Windows is the most influential thing along with the development of all their compatibility and translation layers like Proton and Kex.

@JackSam30767610 @Niflheimm155983 There are a million options for ATX builds. People who want a 40-pound, 1200w space heater PC aren't the target audience for this.

@Niflheimm155983 Why are people acting like form factor is such a big deal. Mid towers aren't even that big or heavy.

As one of probably very few people who have actually built a Steam Machine sized PC before, I can confirm this is true and also that it’s really hard You need to find a single fan GPU, which severely limits your choices and is usually expensive and hard to find, and then it’s nerve wracking to have to cram all your expensive components inside such a small case. I spent around the same as a 2tb steam machine + controller bundle when I was a college student for my Velka 3 build, which was also kind of loud btw Pic isn’t mine, just so you can see how small that case is

Do the people complaining about the steam cube even know how expensive it can be to build a small form factor pc

There's going to come a point where AI is "solved" and we're going to look back at data centers the same way we look at abandoned asylums with lead paint.

I am buying the steam machine. No its not worth its cost BUT the cost came from a memory shortage caused by MS & Nvidia. By not buying the Steam Machine we are supporting the companies that pushed it to fail.

@rezlov__ Both are the target consumer. Owners of high performing PCs know how heavy they are, how noisy they can be and how hot they make the room they're in. We've done RMA processes. We've lived with Bluetooth connection and driver compatibility issues.

Valve regularly does a Steam hardware survey of their playerbase. Do you really think they made this console for people with a $3k PC? Why would they sell PCs to PC players? This is a build that will let a regular joe relax and play most games from the comfort of their couch.

It's funny, when providing reasons to get a pre-built PC that outperforms this device by a margin for a similar - or lower price, the arguments for the Steam Machine get as dumb as it gets. - "but formfactor?" - "but cec?" AS IF ANYONE CARED ABOUT THOSE

i hope they don't flinch, steam machine and deck are more than consoles, they run a fully fledged linux OS that allows you to get work done i know they target a very niche audience, but it's such a powerful concept that i hope it goes mainstream
Dexerto@Dexerto

Valve says its $1,049 Steam Machine costs more than a PS5 because it refuses to sell hardware at a loss and make up the difference with subscriptions or game sales "The cost of the product is basically the cost of the components and what it takes to make it"

Now that I've had some time to think about it, I think I'll still be buying it. A few things make this worth it for me: - My first gaming PC - Small form factor - Just like with the Steam deck, the Steam Machine will have games specifically optimized for it because of Steam OS - Can still be used as a PC - From the little research I've done, it's simply not feasible to build something like this on my own without losing aspects like the form factor and optimization. - Even though I've never owned a gaming PC or any Valve Hardware, I respect what they're doing and the ecosystem looks attractive to me. - I do wish that it was cheaper but we have AI to thank for that *sigh* I do NOT want a humongous gaming PC tower. And I don't want to have to sift through files every time I want to do something. So, to me, it's worth it. 🤷🏾‍♂️

i think the idea behind the steam machine is really good, making PC gaming into a "console" like how the steam deck was making PC gaming into a handheld like the PS Vita and DS but literally what's the point when it costs the same as a more than good enough PC

@Leezelbub @outonparole It's an anti-consumer standard. Subsidized costs in computing come from advertisements for things like Copilot, OneDrive and iCloud. It's the preinstalled OEM bloatware from HP, Dell and Lenovo. The Samsung and Google applications that can't be uninstalled without rooting.
